The Dark SideA
-
My mind goes back to Fumin Wood and how we stuck it outB
Eight days of hunger thirst and cold mowed down by steel and flameC
Waist deep in mud and mad with woe with dead men all aboutB
We fought like fiends and waited for relief that never cameC
Eight days and nights they rolled on us in battle frenzied massD
Debout les morts We hurled them back By God they did not passD
-
They pinned two medals on my chest a yellow and a brownE
And lovely ladies made me blush such pretty words they saidF
I felt a cheerful man almost until my eyes went downE
And there I saw the blankets how they sagged upon my bedF
And then again I drank the cup of sorrow to the dregsG
Oh they can keep their medals if they give me back my legsG
-
I think of how I used to run and leap and kick the ballH
And ride and dance and climb the hills and frolic in the seaI
And all the thousand things that now I'll never do at allH
Mon Dieu there's nothing left in life it often seems to meI
And as the nurses lift me up and strap me in my chairJ
If they would chloroform me off I feel I wouldn't careJ
-
Ah yes we're heroes all to day they point to us with prideA
To day their hearts go out to us the tears are in their eyesK
But wait a bit to morrow they will blindly look asideA
No more they'll talk of what they owe the dues of sacrificeL
One hates to be reminded of an everlasting debtM
It's all in human nature Ah the world will soon forgetM
-
My mind goes back to where I lay wound rotted on the plainN
And ate the muddy mangold roots and drank the drops of dewO
And dragged myself for miles and miles when every move was painN
And over me the carrion crows were retching as they flewO
Oh ere I closed my eyes and stuck my rifle in the airJ
I wish that those who picked me up had passed and left me thereJ
-
The Bright SideA
-
Oh one gets used to everythingP
I hum a merry songQ
And up the street and round the squareJ
I wheel my chair alongQ
For look you how my chest is soundR
And how my arms are strongQ
-
Oh one gets used to anythingP
It's awkward at the firstS
And jolting o'er the cobbles givesT
A man a grievous thirstS
But of all ills that one must bearJ
That's surely not the worstS
-
For there's the cafe open wideA
And there they set me upU
And there I smoke my caporalO
Above my cider cupU
And play manille a while beforeV
I hurry home to supU
-
At home the wife is waiting meI
With smiles and pigeon pieW
And little Zi Zi claps her handsX
With laughter loud and highW
And if there's cause to growl I failO
To see the reason whyW
-
And all the evening by the lampY
I read some tale of crimeZ
Or play my old accordionA2
With Marie keeping timeZ
Until we hear the hour of tenB2
From out the steeple chimeZ
-
Then in the morning bright and soonC2
No moment do I loseD2
Within my little cobbler's shopE2
To gain the silver sousD2
Good luck one has no need of legsG
To make a pair of shoesD2
-
And every Sunday oh it's thenB2
I am the happy manF2
They wheel me to the river sideA
And there with rod and canF2
I sit and fish and catch a dishG2
Of goujons for the panF2
-
Aye one gets used to everythingP
And doesn't seem to mindH2
Maybe I'm happier than mostI2
Of my two legged kindH2
For look you at the darkest cloudJ2
Lo how it's silver linedH2
