The Leaning Tower Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG HIHIEE EJEJKK LILIMM IEIENN

Having an aged hate of heightA
I forced myself to climb the TowerB
Yet paused at every second flightA
Because my heart is scant of powerB
Then when I gained the sloping summitC
Earthward I stared straight as a plummetC
-
When like a phantom by my sideD
I saw a man cadaverousE
At first I fancied him a guideD
For dimly he addressed me thusE
Sir where you stand Oh long agoF
There also stood GalilleoG
-
Proud Master of a mighty mindH
he worshipped truth and knew not fearI
Aye though in age his eyes were blindH
Till death his brain was crystal clearI
And here he communed with the starsE
Where now you park your motor carsE
-
This Pisa was a pleasant placeE
Beloved by poets in their primeJ
Yonder our Shelly used to paceE
And Byron ottavas would rhymeJ
Till Shelley from this fair environK
Scrammed to escape egregious ByronK
-
And you who with the horde have comeL
I hate your guts I say with candourI
Your wife wears slacks and you chew gumL
So I the ghost of Savage LandorI
Beg you step closer to the edgeM
That I may push you o'er the ledgeM
-
But back I shrank sped down the stairI
And sought the Baptistry where God isE
For I had no desire I swearI
To prove the law of falling bodiesE
You're right when one's nigh eighty he's aN
Damphool to climb the Tower of PisaN
