The Hinterland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH AIAIBJBJ KLKLMDMD

You speak to me but does your speechA
With truest truth your thought conveyB
I listen to your words and eachA
Is what I wait to hear you sayB
The pattern that your lips revealC
How does it measure with your mindD
What undertones do you concealC
Your smile is sweet but what's behindD
-
I speak to you but do I tellE
The secret working of my brainF
Frank honesty would make life hellE
And truth be tantamount to painF
When deep into the mind one delvesG
Appalling verities we viewH
If we betrayed our inner selvesG
Would you hate man and I hate youH
-
Are we not strangers each to eachA
And all alone we live and dieI
Deception is the stuff of speechA
And life a smug and glossy lieI
Where puppet like our parts we playB
The first in public we rehearseJ
The second when we shrink awayB
into our private universeJ
-
The soul has its grim hinterlandK
'Twere better never to exploreL
Dark jungles where obscenely plannedK
Prowl monsters of primaeval loreL
With primal fear our lives are fraughtM
And cravenly we cower behindD
The silences of secret thoughtM
The murky mazes of the MindD
