The Farmer's Daughter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIGD

The Rector met a little lassA
Who led a heifer by a ropeB
Said he Why don't you go to MassA
Do you not want to please the PopeB
-
The village maiden made replyC
As on the rope she ceased to pullD
My father said this morning IC
Must take Paquerette to see the bullD
-
The Rector frowned Tis wrong I wistE
To leave your prayer book on the shelfF
Your father has a stronger wristE
Why can't he do the job himselfF
-
Then lovely in her innocenceG
With gaze as pure as meadow poolH
The maid spoke in her sire's defenseI
But Daddy please your ReverenceG
Would rather leave it to the bullD
