Son put a poser up to meA
That made me scratch my headB
God made the whole wide world quoth heA
That's right my boy I saidB
Said son He mad the mountains soarC
And all the plains lie flatD
But Dad what did he do beforeC
He did all thatD
-
Said I Creation was his bizE
He set the stars to shineF
The sun and moon and all that isE
Were His unique designF
The Cosmos is his concrete thoughtG
The Universe his choreC
Said Son I understand but whatH
Did He beforeC
-
I gave it up I could not copeI
With his enquiring prodJ
And must admit I've little hopeI
Of understanding GodJ
Indeed I find more to my mindK
The monkey in the treeA
In whose crude form Nature definedK
Our human destinyA
-
Thought I Why search for DeityA
In visionary shapeL
'Twould better be if we could seeA
The angel in the apeL
Let mystic seek a God aboveM
Far wiser he who delvesN
To find in kindliness and loveM
God in ourselvesN
