Someone's Mother trails the streetA
Wrapt in rotted ragsB
Broken slippers on her feetA
Drearily she dragsB
Drifting in the bitter nightC
Gnawing gutter breadD
With a face of tallow whiteC
Listless as the deadD
-
Someone's Mother in the dimE
Of the grey church wallF
Hears within a Christmas hymnE
One she can recallF
From the h so long agoG
When divinely farH
in the holy alter glowG
She would kneel in prayerI
-
Someone's Mother huddled thereI
Had so sweet a dreamJ
Seemed the sky was Heaven's stairI
Golden and agleamJ
Robed in gown Communion brightC
Singingly she trodK
Up and up the stair of lightC
And thee was waiting GodK
-
Someone's Mother cowers downL
By the old church wallF
Soft above the sleeping townL
Snow begins to fallF
Now her rags are lily fairI
but unproud is sheM
Someone's Mother is not thereI
Lo she climbs the starry stairI
Only angels seeM
