Ruins Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFBHBH BGBEIJIJ AKAKLMLM

Ruins in Rome are four a pennyA
And here along the Appian WayB
I see the monuments of manyA
Esteemed almighty in their dayB
Or so he makes me understandC
My glib guide of the rubber busD
And tells me with a gesture grandC
Behold the tomb of RomulusD
-
Whereat I stared with eyes of aweE
And yet a whit dismayed was IF
When on its crumbling wall I sawG
A washing hanging out to dryF
Yea that relict of slow decayB
With peristyle and gnarly friezeH
Was garnished with a daft displayB
Of bifurcation and chemiseH
-
But as we went our Southward wayB
Another ruin soon I sawG
No antique tower gaunt and greyB
But modern manor rubbled rawE
And on its sill a maiden satI
And told me in a tone of rueJ
It was your allied bombs did thatI
But do not think we're blaming youJ
-
Thought I Time is more kind than weA
Who blot out beauty with a blowK
And truly it was sad to seeA
A gracious mansion levelled lowK
While moulderings of ancient RomeL
Still serve the peasants for their swineM
We do not leave a lovely homeL
A wall to hang a washing lineM
