Three gentlemen live close beside meA
A painter of pictures bizarreB
A poet whose virtues might guide meA
A singer who plays the guitarB
And there on my lintel is CupidC
I leave my door open and yetD
These gentlemen aren't they stupidE
They never make love to BabetteD
-
I go to the shop every morningF
I work with my needle and threadG
Silk satin and velvet adorningF
Then luncheon on coffee and breadG
Then sewing and sewing till sevenH
Or else if the order I getD
I toil and I toil till elevenH
And such is the day of BabetteD
-
It doesn't seem cheerful I fancyA
The wage is unthinkably smallI
And yet there is one thing I can sayJ
I keep a bright face through it allI
I chaff though my head may be achingF
I sing a gay song to forgetD
I laugh though my heart may be breakingF
It's all in the life of BabetteD
-
That gown O my lady of leisureK
You begged to be finished in hasteL
It gives you an exquisite pleasureK
Your lovers remark on its tasteL
Yet oh the poor little white facesM
The tense midnight toil and the fretD
I fear that the foam of its lacesM
Is salt with the tears of BabetteD
-
It takes a brave heart to be cheeryA
With no gleam of hope in the skyN
The future's so utterly drearyA
I'm laughing in case I should cryN
And if where the gay lights are glowingF
I dine with a man I have metD
And snatch a bright moment who's goingF
To blame a poor little BabetteD
-
And you Friend beyond all the tellingF
Although you're an ocean awayJ
Your pictures they tell me are sellingF
You're married and settled they sayJ
Such happiness one wouldn't barterK
Yet oh do you never regretD
The Springtide the roses MontmartreO
Youth poverty love and BabetteD
-
That blond haired chap across the wayJ
With sunny smile and voice so mellowP
He sings in some cheap cabaretJ
Yet what a gay and charming fellowP
His breath with garlic may be strongQ
What matters it his laugh is jollyA
His day he gives to sleep and songQ
His night's made up of song and follyA
