Whose meaning I ignore | B |
From cradlehood I lisped in numbers | C |
Made jingles even in my slumbers | C |
Said Ma He'll be a bard I know it | D |
Said Pa let's hoe he will outgrow it | D |

A dreamer and a drone was I | E |
Who persevered in want and woe | C |
His misery to versify | F |
Yea I was doomed to be a failure | G |
Old Browning rhymes that last with pale lure | H |
And even starving in the gutter | G |
My macaronics I would utter | G |

Then in a poor cheap book I crammed | I |
And to the public maw I tossed | J |
My bitter Dirges of the Damned | I |
My Lyrics of the Lost | J |
Let carping critic flay and flout | K |
My Ditties of the Down and Out | K |
There now said I I've done with verse | C |
My love my weakness and my curse | C |

Then lo As I would fain believe | F |
Before they crown the fates would shame us | C |
I went to sleep one bitter eve | F |
And woke to find that I was famous | C |
And so the sunny sequels were a | L |
Gay villa on the Riviera | L |
A bank account a limousine a | L |
Life patterned dolce e divina | M |

Oh yes my lyric flight is flighty | N |
My muse is much more mite than mighty | N |
But poetry has been my friend | O |
And rhyming's saved me in the end | O |
