Resolutions Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJKLMLM

Each New Year's Eve I used to broodA
On my misdoings of the pastB
And vowed This year I'll be so goodC
Well haply better than the lastB
My record of reforms I readD
To Mum who listened sweetly to itE
Why plan all this my son she saidD
Just do itE
-
Of her wise words I've often thoughtF
Aye sometimes with a pang of painG
When resolutions come to naughtF
And high resolves are sadly vainG
The human heart from failure bleedsH
Hopes may be wrecked so that we rue themI
Don't let us dream of lovely deedsH
Just do themI
-
And so my son uphold your prideJ
Believe serenely in your soulK
Just take things in a steady strideJ
Until behold you've gained your goalK
But if perchance you frame a planL
Of conduct let it be a free oneM
Don't try to make yourself a manL
Just be oneM
