Resolutions Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJKLMLM| Each New Year's Eve I used to brood | A |
| On my misdoings of the past | B |
| And vowed This year I'll be so good | C |
| Well haply better than the last | B |
| My record of reforms I read | D |
| To Mum who listened sweetly to it | E |
| Why plan all this my son she said | D |
| Just do it | E |
| - | |
| Of her wise words I've often thought | F |
| Aye sometimes with a pang of pain | G |
| When resolutions come to naught | F |
| And high resolves are sadly vain | G |
| The human heart from failure bleeds | H |
| Hopes may be wrecked so that we rue them | I |
| Don't let us dream of lovely deeds | H |
| Just do them | I |
| - | |
| And so my son uphold your pride | J |
| Believe serenely in your soul | K |
| Just take things in a steady stride | J |
| Until behold you've gained your goal | K |
| But if perchance you frame a plan | L |
| Of conduct let it be a free one | M |
| Don't try to make yourself a man | L |
| Just be one | M |
