In vain I sing my sheaf of rhymes | A |
And hold my battered hat for dimes | A |

And then a copper collars me | B |
Barking It's begging that you be | B |
Come on dad you're in custody | B |

And then the Beak looks down and says | C |
Sheer doggerel I deem your lays | D |
I send you down for seven days | D |

So for the week I won't disturb | E |
The peace by singing at the curb | E |
I don't mind that but oh it's hell | F |
To have my verse called doggerel | G |
