Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEEFBBB BBGGHIDDBBGG JJKKBBLLDDFF MB

A prisoner speaksA
-
Majority of twenty threeB
I face the Judge with joy and gleeB
For am I not a lucky chapC
No more hanging no more capC
A lifer yes but well I knowD
In fifteen years they'll let me goD
For I'll be pious in my prisonE
Sing with gusto Christ Is RisenE
Serve the hymn books out on SundayF
Sweep the chapel clean on MondayB
Such a model lag I'll beB
In fifteen years they'll set me freeB
-
Majority of twenty threeB
You've helped me cheat the gallows treeB
I'm twenty now at thirty fiveG
How I will laugh to be aliveG
To leap into the world againH
And bless the fools miscalled humaneI
Who say the gibbet's wrong and soD
At thirty five they let me goD
Tat I may sail the across the seaB
A killer unsuspect and freeB
To change my name to darkly thriveG
By hook or crook at thirty fiveG
-
O silent dark and beastly woodJ
Where with my bloodied hands I stoodJ
O piteous child I raped and slewK
Had she been yours would you and youK
Have pardoned me and set me freeB
Majority of twenty threeB
Yet by your solemn vote you willedL
I shall not die though I have killedL
Although I did no mercy showD
In mercy you will let me goD
That he who kills and does not payF
May live to kill another dayF
-
By a majority of twenty three the House of CommonsM
voted the abolition of the death penaltyB
