| Old chaps who choose to die | A |
| In evil passes | B |
| Before themselves they slay | C |
| Invariably they | C |
| Take off their glasses | B |

| As I strolled by the Castle cliff | D |
| An oldish chap I set my eyes on | E |
| Who stood so singularly stiff | D |
| And stark against the blue horizon | F |
| A poet fashioning a sonnet | G |
| I thought how rapt he labours on it | G |

| And then I blinked and stood astare | H |
| And questioned at my sight condition | F |
| For I was seeing empty air | H |
| He must have been an apparition | F |
| Amazed I gazed no one was there | H |
| My sanity roused my suspicion | F |

| I strode to where I saw him stand | I |
| So solitary in the sun | F |
| Nothing just empty sew and land | I |
| no smallest sign of anyone | F |
| While down below I heard the roar | H |
| Of waves five hundred feet or more | H |

| I had been drinking I confess | J |
| There was confusion in my brain | K |
| And I was feeling more or less | J |
| The fumes of overnight champagne | K |
| So standing on that dizzy shelf | L |
| You saw no one I told myself | L |

| No need to call the local law | M |
| For after all its not your business | N |
| You just imagined what you saw | M |
| Then I was seized with sudden dizziness | N |
| For at my feet beyond denying | O |
| A pair of spectacles were lying | O |

| And so I simply let them lie | A |
| And sped from that accursed spot | P |
| No lover of the police am I | A |
| And sooner would be drunk than not | P |
| I'll scram said I and leave the locals | Q |
| To find and trace them dam bi focals | Q |
