Rhyme Scheme: ABABBBBB CDCDABAB CBCBAEAE BFBGABAB BHBHBIBI BJBJKLKK BMBMNOPO BQBQBBBB NDNDARAR ASASKKKKDay after day behold me plying | A |
My pen within an office drear | B |
The dullest dog till homeward hieing | A |
Then lo I reign a king of cheer | B |
A throne have I of padded leather | B |
A little court of kiddies three | B |
A wife who smiles whate'er the weather | B |
A feast of muffins jam and tea | B |
- | |
The table cleared a romping battle | C |
A fairy tale a Children bed | D |
A kiss a hug a hush of prattle | C |
God save each little drowsy head | D |
A cozy chat with wife a sewing | A |
A silver lining clouds that low'r | B |
Then she too goes and with her going | A |
I come again into my Hour | B |
- | |
I poke the fire I snugly settle | C |
My pipe I prime with proper care | B |
The water's purring in the kettle | C |
Rum lemon sugar all are there | B |
And now the honest grog is steaming | A |
And now the trusty briar's aglow | E |
Alas in smoking drinking dreaming | A |
How sadly swift the moments go | E |
- | |
Oh golden hour 'twixt love and duty | B |
All others I to others give | F |
But you are mine to yield to Beauty | B |
To glean Romance to greatly live | G |
For in my easy chair reclining | A |
I feel the sting of ocean spray | B |
And yonder wondrously are shining | A |
The Magic Isles of Far Away | B |
- | |
Beyond the comber's crashing thunder | B |
Strange beaches flash into my ken | H |
On jetties heaped head high with plunder | B |
I dance and dice with sailor men | H |
Strange stars swarm down to burn above me | B |
Strange shadows haunt strange voices greet | I |
Strange women lure and laugh and love me | B |
And fling their bastards at my feet | I |
- | |
Oh I would wish the wide world over | B |
In ports of passion and unrest | J |
To drink and drain a tarry rover | B |
With dragons tattooed on my chest | J |
With haunted eyes that hold red glories | K |
Of foaming seas and crashing shores | L |
With lips that tell the strangest stories | K |
Of sunken ships and gold moidores | K |
- | |
Till sick of storm and strife and slaughter | B |
Some ghostly night when hides the moon | M |
I slip into the milk warm water | B |
And softly swim the stale lagoon | M |
Then through some jungle python haunted | N |
Or plumed morass or woodland wild | O |
I win my way with heart undaunted | P |
And all the wonder of a child | O |
- | |
The pathless plains shall swoon around me | B |
The forests frown the floods appall | Q |
The mountains tiptoe to confound me | B |
The rivers roar to speed my fall | Q |
Wild dooms shall daunt and dawns be gory | B |
And Death shall sit beside my knee | B |
Till after terror torment glory | B |
I win again the sea the sea | B |
- | |
Oh anguish sweet Oh triumph splendid | N |
Oh dreams adieu my pipe is dead | D |
My glass is dry my Hour is ended | N |
It's time indeed I stole to bed | D |
How peacefully the house is sleeping | A |
Ah why should I strange fortunes plan | R |
To guard the dear ones in my keeping | A |
That's task enough for any man | R |
- | |
So through dim seas I'll ne'er go spoiling | A |
The red Tortugas never roam | S |
Please God I'll keep the pot a boiling | A |
And make at least a happy home | S |
My children's path shall gleam with roses | K |
Their grace abound their joy increase | K |
And so my Hour divinely closes | K |
With tender thoughts of praise and peace | K |
