Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEF GHGHIJK BLBLMKMKIn idle dream with pipe in hand | A |
I looked across the Square | B |
And saw the little chapel stand | A |
In eloquent despair | B |
A ruin of the War it was | C |
A dreary dingy mess | D |
It worried me a lot because | E |
My hobby's happiness | F |
- | |
The shabby Priest said 'You are kind | G |
Time leaves us on the lurch | H |
And there are very few who mind | G |
Their duty to the Church | H |
But with this precious sum you give | I |
I'll make it like a gem | J |
Poor folks will come our altar live | K |
To comfort them ' | - |
- | |
So now my chapel of despair | B |
Is full of joy and song | L |
I watch the humble go to prayer | B |
Although I don't belong | L |
An artist and agnostic I | M |
Possess but little pelf | K |
But oh what blessings it can buy | M |
Them and myself | K |
