My lead dog Mike was like a bearA
I reckon he was grizzly bredB
For when he reared up in the airA
Ho over topped me by a headB
He'd cuff me with his hefty pawsC
Jest like a puppy actin' cuteD
And I would swear by Gosh he wasE
The world's most mighty malemuteD
-
But oh the grub that dog could eatD
Yet he was never belly tightD
It almost broke me buying meatD
To satisfy his appetiteD
Then came a change I wondered atD
Returning when the dawn was dimF
He seemed mysteriously fatD
And scorned the bones I'd saved for himF
-
My shack was near the hospitalG
Wherein there laboured Nurse LouiseH
Who was to me a little palI
I planned in every way to pleaseH
As books and sweets for her I boughtD
My mug she seemed to kindo' likeJ
But Mike he loved her quite a lotD
And she was very fond of MikeJ
-
Strolling with her as moonlight gleamedD
I saw a strand of cotton trailK
From Mike the which unseemly seemedD
To have its source behind his tailK
I trod on it with chagrin grimF
And with a kick his absence urgedD
But as he ran from out of himF
Such yards and yards of lint emergedD
-
And then on me the truth did dawnL
Beyond the shadow of a doubtD
That poor dam dog was gorged uponM
The poultices threw outD
So love my dog love me I thoughtD
And seized the moment to proposeN
Mike's dead but in our garden lotD
He's manure for a big dog roseN
