All day he lay upon the sandA
When summer sun was brightB
And let the grains sift through his handA
With infantile delightB
Just like a child so soft and fairC
Though he was twenty fiveD
An innocent my mother careC
Had kept so long aliveD
-
Oh it is hard to bear a crossE
For five and twenty yearsF
A daft son and a husband's lossE
Are woes out weighing tearsG
Yet bright and beautiful was heH
Though barely could he walkI
And when he signaled out to seaH
His talk was baby talkI
-
The man I loved was drowned out thereC
When we were ten weeks wedJ
'Tis bitter hard a boy to bearC
That's fathered by the deadJ
And now I give my life to himK
Because he needs me soL
And as I look my sight is dimK
With pity love and woeL
-
Then suddenly I see him riseM
Tall stalwart and sereneN
Lo There he stands before my eyesM
The man he might have beenO
-
Dear Mother mine I hear him sayP
The curse that bound me fastQ
Some miracle has swept awayP
And all you pain is pastQ
Now I am strong and sane and freeH
And you shall have your dueR
For as you loved and cherished meH
I'll love and cherish youR
-
His kisses sooth away my painS
His clasp is paradiseT
Then then I look at him againU
With terror in my eyesM
-
For down he sinks upon the sandA
And heavy droops his headJ
The golden grains drift through his handA
I know my boy is deadJ
