Land Mine Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDF GHGHIJI KLKLMNMN OPOQRSRS TUTUKDK| A grey gull hovered overhead | A |
| Then wisely flew away | B |
| 'In half a jiffy you'll be dead ' | C |
| I thought I heard it say | B |
| As there upon the railway line | D |
| Checking an urge to cough | E |
| I laboured to de fuse the mine | D |
| That had not yet gone off | F |
| - | |
| I tapped around the time clock rim | G |
| Then something worried me | H |
| I heard the singing of a hymn | G |
| Nearer my God to Thee | H |
| That damned Salvation Army band | I |
| I phoned back to the boys | J |
| 'Please tell them they will understand | I |
| Cut out the bloody noise ' | - |
| - | |
| Silence I went to work anew | K |
| And then I heard a tick | L |
| That told me the blast was due | K |
| I never ran so quick | L |
| I heard the fury roar behind | M |
| The earth erupted hell | N |
| As hoisted high and stunned and blind | M |
| Into a ditch I fell | N |
| - | |
| Then when at last I crawled from cover | O |
| My hands were bloody raw | P |
| And I was blue and bruised all over | O |
| And this is what I saw | Q |
| All pale but panting with elation | R |
| And very much unstuck | S |
| There was the Army of Salvation | R |
| Emerging from the muck | S |
| - | |
| And then I heard the Captain saying | T |
| ''Twas Heaven heard our pleas | U |
| For there anight we all were praying | T |
| Down on our bended knees | U |
| 'Twas little hope your comrades gave you | K |
| Though we had faith divine | D |
| The blessed Lord stooped down to save you | K |
| But Gosh He cut it fine ' | - |
