Infirmities Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCDBEEEFGGGF HHHIJJJI EEEEKKKEBecause my teeth are feebly few | A |
I cannot bolt my grub like you | A |
But have to chew and chew and chew | A |
As you can see | B |
Yet every mouthful seems so good | C |
I would not haste it if I could | C |
And so I salivate my food | D |
With ecstasy | B |
Because my purse is poor in pence | E |
I spend my dough with common sense | E |
And live without the least pretence | E |
In simple state | F |
The things I can't afford to buy | G |
Might speed the day I have to die | G |
So pleased with poverty am I | G |
And bless my fate | F |
- | |
Because my heart is growing tired | H |
No more by foolish passion fired | H |
Nor by ambitious hope inspired | H |
As in my youth | I |
I am content to sit and rest | J |
And prove the last of life's the best | J |
And ponder with a cheerful zest | J |
Some saintly truth | I |
- | |
Because I cannot do the things | E |
I used to comfort round me clings | E |
And from the moil of market brings | E |
Me rich release | E |
So welcome age with tranquil mind | K |
Even infirmities are kind | K |
And in our frailing we may find | K |
Life's crown of peace | E |
