I found in desert place | B |
And wondered why it lay alone | A |
In that abandoned place | B |
Said I 'Maybe a Palace stood | C |
Where now the lizards crawl | D |
With courts of musky quietude | C |
And turrets tall | D |

Maybe where low the vultures wing | E |
'Mid mosque and minaret | C |
The proud pavilion of a King | E |
Was luminously set | C |
'Mid fairy fountains alcoves dim | F |
Upon a garnet throne | A |
He ruled and now all trace of him | F |
Is just this stone | A |

Ah well I've done with wandering | E |
But from a blousy bar | G |
I see with drunk imagining | E |
A Palace like a star | G |
I build it up from one grey stone | A |
With gardens hanging high | H |
And dream Long long ere Babylon | I |
It's King was I | H |
