Humility Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED DFDFGHGH FIFIJKJK LALAMFMFI met upon a narrow way | A |
Dead weary from his toil | B |
A fellow warped and gnarled and grey | A |
Who reeked of sweat and soil | B |
His rags were readyful to rot | C |
His eyes were dreary dim | D |
Yet yet I had the humble thought | E |
To raise my hat to him | D |
- | |
For thinks I It's the likes of him | D |
That makes the likes of me | F |
With horny hand and lagging limb | D |
He slaves to keep me free | F |
That I may have a golden time | G |
And praise the Lord on high | H |
Life grinds into the bloody grime | G |
A better man than I | H |
- | |
Yet if in sheer humility | F |
I yield this yokel place | I |
Will he not think it mockery | F |
And spit into my face | I |
Saying How can you care a damn | J |
As now my way you bar | K |
When it's because of what I am | J |
You Sir are what you are | K |
- | |
But no he did not speak like that | L |
Nor homage did I pay | A |
I did not lift my bowler hat | L |
To greet his common clay | A |
Instead he made me feel an ass | M |
As most respectfully | F |
He stepped aside to let me pass | M |
And raised his cap to ME | F |
