Highland Hospitality Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKDKD LDLDMNMN DODODDDD

Unto his housemaid spoke the LairdA
Tonight the Bishop is our guestB
The spare room must be warmed and airedA
To please him we will do our bestB
A worthy haggis you must makeC
And serve a bowl of barley breeD
We must be hearty for the sakeC
Of Highland HospitalityD
-
The feast was set the candles litE
The Bishop came with modest mienF
And one surmised was glad to sitE
And sup in this ancestral sceneF
A noble haggis graced the boardG
The Laird proposed a toast or twoH
And ever and anon he pouredG
His guest a glass of Mountain DewH
-
Then to his maid the Laird gave tongueI
My sonsie Jean my friend is oldJ
Comparatively you are youngI
And not so sensitive to coldJ
Poor chiel His blood austerely beatsK
Though it be sped by barley breeD
Slip half an hour between the sheetsK
Brave lass and warm his bed a weeD
-
Said she I'll do the best I canL
So that his couch may cosy beD
And as a human warming panL
Prove Highland HospitalityD
So hearing sounds of mild carouseM
As in the down she pillowed deepN
In half an hour I will arouseM
She vowed then soundly went to sleepN
-
So when the morn was amber orbedD
The Bishop from a dream awokeO
And as his parritch he absorbedD
Unto his host he slyly spokeO
Your haggis Laird was nobly bredD
And braw your brew of barley breeD
But oh your thought to warm the bedD
That's Highland HospitalityD
