Gentle Gaoler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC BDBDEE FGFGHH IJIKLL

Being a gaoler I'm supposedA
To be a hard boiled guyB
Yet never prison walls enclosedA
A kinder soul than IB
Passing my charges precious pillsC
To end their illsC
-
And if in gentle sleep they dieB
And pass to pleasant peaceD
No one suspects that it is IB
Who gave them their releaseD
No matter what the Doctor thinksE
The Warden winksE
-
A lifer's is a fearful fateF
It wrings the heart of meG
And what a saving to the StateF
A sudden death must beG
Doomed men should have the legal rightH
To end their plightH
-
And so my veronel they takeI
And bid goodbye to painJ
And sleep and never never wakeI
To living hell againK
Oh call me curst or call me blestL
I give them restL
