Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJBGBG KEKELDLD CMNMBEIEOn silver sand where ripples curled | A |
I counted sea gulls seven | B |
Shy secret screened from all the world | A |
And innocent as heaven | B |
They did not of my nearness know | C |
For dawn was barely bright | D |
And they were still like spots of snow | C |
In that pale pearly light | D |
- | |
Then one went forth unto the sea | E |
That rippled up in gold | F |
And there were rubies flashing free | E |
From out its wing unfold | F |
It ducked and dived in pretty play | G |
The while the other six | H |
So gravely sat it seemed that they | G |
Were marvelled by its tricks | H |
- | |
Then with a sudden flurry each | I |
Down rushed to join its mate | J |
And in a flash that sickle beach | I |
With rapture was elate | J |
With joy they pranked till everyone | B |
Was diamonded with spray | G |
Then flicked with flame to greet the sun | B |
They rose and winged away | G |
- | |
But with their going oh the surge | K |
Of loss they left in me | E |
For in my heart was born the urge | K |
The passion to be free | E |
And where each dawn with terror brings | L |
Some tale of bale and blight | D |
Who would not envy silver wings | L |
The sea gull in its flight | D |
- | |
Let me not know the soils of woe | C |
That chain this stricken earth | M |
Let me forget the fear and fret | N |
That bind men from their birth | M |
Let me be the one with wind and sun | B |
With earth and sky and sea | E |
Oh let me teach in living speech | I |
God's glory Liberty | E |
