Euthansia Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACDD EFEGHH IJIJKKLMLMNN OPOQRRA sea gull with a broken wing | A |
I found upon the kelp strewn shore | B |
It sprawled and gasped I sighed Poor thing | A |
I fear your flying days are o'er | C |
Sad victim of a savage gun | D |
So ends your soaring in the sun | D |
- | |
I only wanted to be kind | E |
Its icy legs I gently caught | F |
Thinking its fracture I might bind | E |
But fiercely in its fear it fought | G |
Till guessing that I meant no ill | H |
It glared and gaped but lay quite still | H |
- | |
I took it home and gave it food | I |
And nursed its wing day after day | J |
Alas for my solicitude | I |
It would not eat but pined away | J |
And so at last with tender hands | K |
I took it to its native sands | K |
I'll leave it where its kindred are | L |
I thought And maybe they will cheer | M |
And comfort it I watched afar | L |
I saw them wheeling swiftly near | M |
Awhile they hovered overhead | N |
Then darted down and stabbed it dead | N |
- | |
When agonized is human breath | O |
And there's of living not a chance | P |
Could it not be that gentle death | O |
Might mean divine deliverance | Q |
Might it not seep into our skulls | R |
To be as merciful as gulls | R |
