Yet bone was worthier to own | D |
Those precious books in vellum bound | C |
Than I a dreamer and a drone | D |
- | |
No prize at school I ever gained | E |
Shirking my studies I suppose | F |
Yes I remember being caned | E |
For lack of love of Latin prose | F |
For algebra I won no praise | G |
In grammar I was far from bright | H |
Yet oh how Poetry would raise | G |
In me a rapture of delight | H |
- | |
I never gained a prize at school | I |
The dullard's cap adorned my head | J |
My masters wrote me down a fool | I |
And yet I'm sorry they are dead | J |
I'd like to go to them and say | K |

Oh I am old and worn and grey | K |
And maybe have not long to live | M |
Yet 'tis my hope at some Prize Day | K |
At my old school the Head will give | N |
A tome or two of mine to crown | O |
Some pupil's well deserved success | P |
Proving a scapegrace and a clown | O |
May win at last to worthiness | Q |
