The meal was o'er the lamp was litA
The family sat in its glowB
The Mother never ceased to knitA
The Daughter never slacked to sewB
The Father read his evening newsC
The Son was playing solitaireD
If peace a happy home could chooseC
I'm sure you'd swear that it was thereD

BUTE
-
The MotherF
-
Ah me this hard lump in my breastG
Old Doctor Brown I went to seeH
Because it don't give me no restG
He fears it may malignant beH
To operate it might be wellI
And keep the evil of awhileJ
But oh the folks I dare not tellI
And so I sit and knit and smileJ
-
The FatherF
-
The mortgage on the house is dueK
My bank account is overdrawnL
I'm at my wits end what to doK
I've plunged but now my hope is goneL
For coverage my brokers callM
But I'm so deeply in the redN
If ever I should lose my allM
I'll put a bullet in my headN
-
The DaughterF
-
To smile I do the best I canO
But it's so hard to act up gayP
My lover is a married manO
And now his child is on the wayP
My plight I cannot long concealQ
And though I bear their bitter blameR
Unto my dears I must revealQ
My sin my sorrow and my shameR
-
The SonS
-
Being a teller in a BankT
I'd no right in a blackjack gameR
But for my ruin I must thankT
My folly for a floozie dameR
To face the Manager I quailU
If he should check my cash I'm sunkV
Before they throw me into gaolU
I guess I'd better do a bunkV
-
So sat they in the Winter eveW
In sweet serenity becalmedX
So peaceful you could scarce believeW
They shared the torments of the damnedY
Yet there the Mother smiles and knitsZ
The Daughter sews white underwearD
The Father reads and smokes and spitsZ
While Sonny Boy plays solitaireD
