| I've won in weary peacetime wars | B |
| A fighting for my little brood | C |
| To win them shelter shoon and food | C |
| But most of all to give them faith | D |
| In God's good mercy unto death | E |

| Proud trophies won in foreign fight | F |
| But though their crosses bravely shine | G |
| My boys can show no wounds like mine | G |
| Grim gashes dolorously healed | H |
| And inner ailings unrevealed | H |

| Life lasting has my battle been | I |
| My enemy a fierce machine | J |
| And I am marked by many a blow | K |
| In conflict with a tireless foe | K |
| Till warped and bent beneath the beat | H |
| Of life's unruth I own defeat | H |

| Yet strip me bare and you will see | L |
| A worthy warrior I be | L |
| Although no uniform I've worn | M |
| By wounds of labour I am torn | M |
| Leave the their ribbands and their stars | A |
