Decorations Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDE FFGGHH IJKKHH LLMMAA

My only medals are the scarsA
I've won in weary peacetime warsB
A fighting for my little broodC
To win them shelter shoon and foodC
But most of all to give them faithD
In God's good mercy unto deathE
-
My sons have medals gleaming brightF
Proud trophies won in foreign fightF
But though their crosses bravely shineG
My boys can show no wounds like mineG
Grim gashes dolorously healedH
And inner ailings unrevealedH
-
Life lasting has my battle beenI
My enemy a fierce machineJ
And I am marked by many a blowK
In conflict with a tireless foeK
Till warped and bent beneath the beatH
Of life's unruth I own defeatH
-
Yet strip me bare and you will seeL
A worthy warrior I beL
Although no uniform I've wornM
By wounds of labour I am tornM
Leave the their ribbands and their starsA
Behold I proudly prize my scarsA
