Courage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJJFJF

Ten little brown chicks scattered and scuffledA
Under the blue berries hiding in fearB
Mother grouse cackling feathers all ruffledA
Dashed to defend them as we drew nearB
Heart of a heroine how I admired herC
Of such devotion great poets have sungD
Homes have been blest by the love that inspired herC
Risking her life for the sake of her youngD
-
Ten little chicks on her valour reliantE
Peered with bright eyes from the bilberry sprayF
Fiercely she faced us dismayed but defiantE
Rushed at us bravely to scare us awayF
Then my companion a crazy young devilG
After he told me he'd done it for funH
Pretended to tremble and raised his arm levelG
And ere I could check him he blazed with his gunH
-
Headless she lay from her neck the blood spoutedI
And dappled her plumage the poor pretty thingJ
Ten little chicks oh I know for I countedI
Came out and they tried to creep under her wingJ
Sickened I said Here's an end to my killingJ
I swear nevermore bird or beast will I slayF
Starving I may be but no more blood spillingJ
That oath I have kept and I keep it to dayF
