Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJKJLMLM NBNBOHOH MPMPNQNR

He stared at me with sad hurt eyesA
That drab untidy manB
And though my clients I despiseA
I do the best I canB
To comfort them with cheerful chatC
Quite comme il faut of courseD
And furnish evidence so thatC
Their wives may claim divorceD
-
But as this chap sobbed out his woesE
I thought How it's a shameF
His wife's a bitch and so he goesE
And takes himself the blameF
And me behaving like a heelG
To earn a filthy feeH
Said I You've had a dirty dealG
What of yourself said heH
-
And so I told him how I wasI
A widow of the warJ
And doing what I did becauseK
Two sons I struggled forJ
As I sat knitting through the nightL
He eyed me from the bedM
And in the rosy morning lightL
Impulsively he saidM
-
Through in this sordid game we playN
To cheat the law we planB
i do believe you when you sayN
You hold aloof from manB
Unto the dead you have been trueO
And on the day I'm freeH
To prove how I have faith in youO
Please will you marry meH
-
That's how it was Now we are wedM
And life's a list of joysP
The old unhappy past is deadM
He's father to my boysP
And I have told him just to dayN
Though forty I confessQ
A little sister's on the wayN
To crown our happinessR
