Above the vine clad shelves | B |
And as the peasants pass it by | A |
They cross themselves | B |
But I alone I grieve to state | C |
Lack sentiment divine | D |
A citified sophisticate | C |
I make no sign | D |

Their gesture may a habit be | E |
Mechanic in a sense | F |
Yet somehow it awakes in me | E |
Strange reverence | G |
And though from ignorance it stem | H |
Somehow I deeply grieve | I |
And wish down in my heart like them | H |
I could believe | I |

Suppose a cottage I should buy | A |
And little patch of vine | D |
With pure and humble spirit I | A |
Might make the Sign | D |
Aye though I godless way I go | J |
And sceptic in my trend | K |
A faith in something I don't know | J |
Might save me in the end | K |
