Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHH IIJJKKLAA| How often do I wish I were | A |
| What people call a character | A |
| A ripe and cherubic old chappie | B |
| Who lives to make his fellows happy | B |
| With in his eyes a merry twinkle | C |
| And round his lips a laughing wrinkle | C |
| Who radiating hope and cheer | D |
| Grows kindlier with every year | D |
| For this ideal let me strive | E |
| And keep the lad in me alive | E |
| Nor argument nor anger know | F |
| But my own way serenly go | F |
| The woes of men to understand | G |
| Yet walk with humour hand in hand | G |
| To love each day and wonder why | H |
| Folks are not so jocund as I | H |
| - | |
| So be you simple decent kind | I |
| With gentle heart and quiet mind | I |
| And if to righteous anger stung | J |
| Restrain your temper and your toungue | J |
| Let thought for others be your guide | K |
| And patience triumph over pride | K |
| With charity for those who err | L |
| Live life so folks may say you were | A |
| God bless your heart A Character | A |
