A
In the Grass Halt by the WaysideB
-
-
In my tired helpless bodyC
I feel my sunk heart acheD
But suddenly loudlyC
The far the great guns shakeD
-
Is it sudden terrorE
Burdens my heart My handF
Flies to my head I listenG
And do not understandF
-
Is death so near thenH
From this blazing lightI
Do I plunge suddenlyC
Into vortex NightI
-
Guns again the quietJ
Shakes at the vengeful voiceK
It is terrible pleasureE
I do not fear I rejoiceK
-
-
On the Way UpL
-
-
The battery grinds and jinglesM
Mile succeeds to mileN
Shaking the noonday sunshineO
The guns lunge out a whileN
And then are still a whileN
-
We amble along the highwayP
The reeking powdery dustQ
Ascends and cakes our facesR
With a striped sweaty crustQ
-
Under the still sky's violetS
The heat throbs in the airT
The white road's dusty radianceU
Assumes a dark glareT
-
With a head hot and heavyC
And eyes that cannot restV
And a black heart burningW
In a stifled breastV
-
I sit in the saddleX
I feel the road unrollX
And keep my senses straightenedY
Toward to morrow's goalX
-
There over unknown meadowsZ
Which we must reach at lastA2
Day and night thundersB2
A black and chilly blastA2
-
Heads forget heavinessB2
Hearts forget spleenC2
For by that mighty winnowingW
Being is blown cleanC2
-
Light in the eyes againH
Strength in the handF
A spirit dares dies forgivesB2
And can understandF
-
And best Love comes back againH
After grief and shameD2
And along the wind of deathE2
Throws a clean flameD2
-
The battery grinds and jinglesB2
Mile succeeds to mileX
Suddenly battering the silenceB2
The guns burst out a whileX
-
I lift my head and smileX
-
-
NearerE
-
-
Nearer and ever nearerE
My body tired but tenseB2
Hovers 'twixt vague pleasureE
And tremulous confidenceB2
-
Arms to have and to use themF2
And a soul to be madeG2
Worthy if not worthyC
If afraid unafraidG2
-
To endure for a littleX
To endure and have doneG
Men I love about meC
Over me the sunG
-
And should at last suddenlyC
Fly the speeding deathE2
The four great quarters of heavenG
Receive this little breathE2
