Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCC EDDFEF GHIGJG DGKGLD MGNGNM DOGPGO QRRSTQ UHGAGH

for Elizabeth BishopA
-
Nautilus Island's hermitB
heiress still lives through winter in her Spartan cottageC
her sheep still graze above the seaD
Her son's a bishop Her farmer is first selectman in our villageC
she's in her dotageC
-
Thirsting forE
the hierarchic privacyD
of Queen Victoria's centuryD
she buys up allF
the eyesores facing her shoreE
and lets them fallF
-
The season's illG
we've lost our summer millionaireH
who seemed to leap from an L L BeanI
catalogue His nine knot yawlG
was auctioned off to lobstermenJ
A red fox stain covers Blue HillG
-
And now our fairyD
decorator brightens his shop for fallG
his fishnet's filled with orange corkK
orange his cobbler's bench and awlG
there is no money in his workL
he'd rather marryD
-
One dark nightM
my Tudor Ford climbed the hill's skullG
I watched for love cars Lights turned downN
they lay together hull to hullG
where the graveyard shelves on the townN
My mind's not rightM
-
A car radio bleatsD
quot Love O careless Love quot I hearO
my ill spirit sob in each blood cellG
as if my hand were at its throatP
I myself am hellG
nobody's hereO
-
only skunks that searchQ
in the moonlight for a bite to eatR
They march on their solves up Main StreetR
white stripes moonstruck eyes' red fireS
under the chalk dry and spar spireT
of the Trinitarian ChurchQ
-
I stand on topU
of our back steps and breathe the rich airH
a mother skunk with her column of kittens swills the garbage pailG
She jabs her wedge head in a cupA
of sour cream drops her ostrich tailG
and will not scareH
