Your nurse could only speak Italian	B
but after twenty minutes I could imagine your final week	C
and tears ran down my cheeks	D

When I embarked from Italy with my Mother s body	A
the whole shoreline of the Golfo di Genova	E
was breaking into fiery flower	F
The crazy yellow and azure sea sleds	G
blasting like jack hammers across	H
the spumante bubbling wake of our liner	F
recalled the clashing colors of my Ford	I
Mother traveled first class in the hold	J
her Risorgimento black and gold casket	K
was like Napoleon s at the Invalides	H

While the passengers were tanning	L
on the Mediterranean in deck chairs	H
our family cemetery in Dunbarton	B
lay under the White Mountains	H
in the sub zero weather	F
The graveyard s soil was changing to stone	B
so many of its deaths had been midwinter	F
Dour and dark against the blinding snowdrifts	H
its black brook and fir trunks were as smooth as masts	H
A fence of iron spear hafts	H
black bordered its mostly Colonial grave slates	H
The only unhistoric soul to come here	M
was Father now buried beneath his recent	N
unweathered pink veined slice of marble	O
Even the Latin of his Lowell motto	P
Occasionem cognosce	H
seemed too businesslike and pushing here	M
where the burning cold illuminated	Q
the hewn inscriptions of Mother s relatives	H
twenty or thirty Winslows and Starks	H
Frost had given their names a diamond edge	R

In the grandiloquent lettering on Mother s coffin	B
Lowell had been misspelled LOVEL	O
The corpse	H
was wrapped like panettone in Italian tinfoil	O
