The Dumb Soldier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEAA AAFF FFGG HHFF IIJJ KKAA LLMM

When the grass was closely mownA
Walking on the lawn aloneA
In the turf a hole I foundB
And hid a soldier undergroundB
-
Spring and daisies came apaceC
Grasses hid my hiding placeC
Grasses run like a green seaD
O'er the lawn up to my kneeD
-
Under grass alone he liesE
Looking up with leaden eyesE
Scarlet coat and pointed gunA
To the stars and to the sunA
-
When the grass is ripe like grainA
When the scythe is stoned againA
When the lawn is shaven clearF
Then my hole shall reappearF
-
I shall find him never fearF
I shall find my grenadierF
But for all that's gone and comeG
I shall find my soldier dumbG
-
He has lived a little thingH
In the grassy woods of springH
Done if he could tell me trueF
Just as I should like to doF
-
He has seen the starry hoursI
And the springing of the flowersI
And the fairy things that passJ
In the forests of the grassJ
-
In the silence he has heardK
Talking bee and ladybirdK
And the butterfly has flownA
O'er him as he lay aloneA
-
Not a word will he discloseL
Not a word of all he knowsL
I must lay him on the shelfM
And make up the tale myselfM
