IA
-
I DREAMED of forest alleys fairB
And fields of gray flowered grassC
Where by the yellow summer moonD
My Jenny seemed to passC
-
I dreamed the yellow summer moonD
Behind a cedar woodE
Lay white on fields of rippling grassC
Where I and Jenny stoodE
-
I dreamed but fallen through my dreamF
In a rainy land I lieA
Where wan wet morning crowns the hillsG
Of grim realityH
-
IIA
-
I am as one that keeps awakeI
All night in the month of JuneD
That lies awake in bed to watchJ
The trees and great white moonD
-
For memories of love are moreK
Than the white moon there aboveL
And dearer than quiet moonshineM
Are the thoughts of her I loveL
-
IIIA
-
Last night I lingered long withoutN
My last of loves to seeH
Alas the moon white window panesO
Stared blindly back on meH
-
To day I hold her very handP
Her very waist embraceQ
Like clouds across a pool I readR
Her thoughts upon her faceQ
-
And yet as now through her clear eyesS
I seek the inner shrineM
I stoop to read her virgin heartT
In doubt if it be mineM
-
O looking long and fondly thusU
What vision should I seeH
No vision but my own white faceQ
That grins and mimics meH
-
IVL
-
Once more upon the same old seatV
In the same sunshiny weatherW
The elm trees' shadows at their feetV
And foliage move togetherW
-
The shadows shift upon the grassC
The dial point creeps onX
The clear sun shines the loiterers passC
As then they passed and shoneY
-
But now deep sleep is on my heartT
Deep sleep and perfect restZ
Hope's flutterings now disturb no moreK
The quiet of my breastZ
