Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHII IIIIJJKKJJIILLJJMMNN LLJJOO

WHETHER upon the garden seatA
You lounge with your uplifted feetA
Under the May's whole Heaven of blueB
Or whether on the sofa youB
No grown up person being byC
Do some soft corner occupyC
Take you this volume in your handsD
And enter into other landsD
For lo as children feign supposeE
You hunting in the garden rowsE
Or in the lumbered attic orF
The cellar a nail studded doorF
And dark descending stairway foundG
That led to kingdoms undergroundG
There standing you should hear with easeH
Strange birds a singing or the treesH
Swing in big robber woods or bellsI
On many fairy citadelsI
-
There passing through a step or soI
Neither mamma nor nurse need knowI
From your nice nurseries you would passI
Like Alice through the Looking GlassI
Or Gerda following Little RayJ
To wondrous countries far awayJ
Well and just so this volume canK
Transport each little maid or manK
Presto from where they live awayJ
Where other children used to playJ
As from the house your mother seesI
You playing round the garden treesI
So you may see if you but lookL
Through the windows of this bookL
Another child far far awayJ
And in another garden playJ
But do not think you can at allM
By knocking on the window callM
That child to hear you He intentN
Is still on his play business bentN
He does not hear he will not lookL
Nor yet be lured out of this bookL
For long ago the truth to sayJ
He has grown up and gone awayJ
And it is but a child of airO
That lingers in the garden thereO
