The dripping of the boughs in silence heardA
Softly the low note of some lingering birdA
Amid the weeping vapour the chill fallB
Of solitary evening upon allB
That stirs and hopes and apprehends and grievesC
With pining odours of the ruined leavesC
Have like a dew distilled upon my heartD
The air of death but now recoiling startD
Longing and keen remembrance out of sighsE
And forward the desiring spirit fliesE
Toward the wild peace of that illumined shoreF
Which left behind her yet still shines beforeF
To Douro rushing through the mighty hillsG
Now his great stream with fancied splendour fillsG
Even this brooding twilight a swift ghostH
Journeying forever to the glimmering coastH
Where his majestic voice is heard afarI
Exulting dim upon that ocean barI
O Douro gliding by dark woods and fleetJ
Beneath thy shadowy rocks in the noon heatJ
How my heart faints to follow after theeK
On one true course to my deep destined seaK
To take no care of dimness or sunshineL
Urged ever by an inward way divineL
Nor falter in this heavy gloom that bringsM
So thick upon me lamentable thingsM
Of earth and hinders the swift spirit's wingsM
And clouds the steadfast vision that sustainsN
Alone the trembling heart amid perpetual painsN
-
Dear friend who thirstest even as I to beK
Heir and possessor of sweet libertyK
Once more in memory let us pluck the hourO
That bloomed so perfect and renew the powerO
Of joy within our wondering breasts to feelP
That freshness of eternal things and healP
All our unhappy thoughts in those pure raysQ
Not yet the last of these delightful daysQ
Into the dark unwillingly has flownR
And thou and I upon a hill o'ergrownR
That indolently shadows Douro streamS
Together watch the wonderful clear dreamS
Of evening Under the dark shore of pinesT
Noiselessly running the wide water shinesT
Curving afar from where the mountains liftU
Their burning heads through many a forest riftU
The River comes scenting the spaces freeK
In this broad channel of his welcoming seaK
No more by silent precipices hewnR
Out of the night murmuring a lonely tuneR
To craggy Fregeneda nor where shinesT
Regoa throned among her purple vinesT
Impetuously seeking valleys newR
But smoothing his broad mirror to the hueR
And peace of heaven unhasting now he flowsV
And with the sky unfathomably glowsV
Even as on yonder shore the woods receiveW
In their empurpled bosoms the warm eveW
As when a lover gazes tenderlyK
Upon his loved one and as tender sheK
Hushes her heart her joy to realizeE
So hushed so lovely so contented liesE
Earth by that earnest gazing glory blestX
But on this hither bank that fervent WestX
Is hidden behind us and the stems aroundY
Spring shadowy from the bare and darkling groundY
Only a single pine out of the shadeZ
Emerges in what splendour soft arrayedZ
Magical clearness warming to the sightA2
As to the touch it would be plumed with lightA2
Motionless upward the tree soars and burnsB2
But now the dews upon the freshened fernsB2
In the dim hollow gather and cool scentC2
Of herbage with the pine's pure odour blentC2
And voices of the villagers belowD2
As home with music up the stream they rowD2
Greet us descending every blossom sleepsE2
And bluer and more blue the evening steepsE2
Water and fragrant grass and the straight stemsE2
In tender mystery Down a path that hemsE2
The hollow to our waiting boat we comeF2
Pale purple flames shining amid the gloomG2
Signal the autumn crocus look afarI
Betwixt the tree tops the first ventured starI
Soon gliding homeward under shadowy shoresE2
And deepened sky to the repeated oars'E2
Strong chime we hasten Now along pale sandC2
Our ripple leaps in silver now the landC2
High over the swift water darkly massedC2
Echoes our falling blades as we go pastC2
Until enthroned upon her hills divineR
The city nears us lights begin to shineR
Scarce from the stars distinguished so the gloomG2
Has mingled earth and sky more steeply loomG2
The banks on either side at intervalsE2
Tufted with trees or crowned with winding wallsE2
And now at last the river opens largeH2
Filled with the city's murmur from his margeH2
Slope over slope the glimmering terracesE2
Rise and their scattered lamps' bright imagesE2
Cast on the wavering water and we hearI2
The sound of soft bells and cries faint or nearJ2
From the dim wharves or anchored ships whose sparsE2
Entangle in dark meshes the white starsE2
And pale smoke rising blue on the blue airK2
Sleeps in a thin cloud under heights that bearK2
Towers and roofs lofty against the westC2
Where yet a clearness lingers Now the breastC2
Of Douro heaves foreboding whither boundC2
His currents hasten and with joyous soundC2
As though the encountering brine new pulses gaveL2
Lifts to outrace our speed his buoyant waveL2
For hearken up the peaceful evening borneR
Out of the wide sea gates low thunders warnR
Of Ocean beating with his sleepless surgeM2
Along the wild sand marges the deep dirgeM2
Of mariners that wakes the widow's earI2
At night far inland terrible and nearJ2
Fainter this eve he murmurs than as oftC2
His troubled music here by distance softC2
The abrupt volley the sharp shattering roarF
And seethe of foam flung tumbling up the shoreF
Mingle in one wide rumour that all roundC2
Is heard afar robing the air with soundC2
Deep in my heart I hear it The still nightC2
Deepens as we ascend the homeward heightC2
And loud or low in following intervalsE2
Over the hills the sound unwearied fallsE2
And as upon my bed my heavy eyesE2
Close up the drowsing mind re occupiesE2
-
O what a vision floats into my sleepN2
As a night shutting flower my senses keepN2
The live day's lingering odours and warm huesE2
That thought and motion with themselves transfuseE2
Till sound and light and perfume are but oneR
Mingled in fires of the embracing sunR
Yet still I am aware of Ocean stirredC2
Far off and like a grave rejoicing heardC2
Am I awake or in consenting dreamsE2
Pour thither all my thought's tumultuous streamsE2
His voice to meet them a deep answer sendsE2
My soul to listen her light wing suspendsE2
And pillowed upon undulating soundC2
For all desire hath satisfaction foundC2
He calls her thither where the winds uncageM2
Vast longing that the unsounded seas assuageM2
Breeze after breeze her wing d pinnace bearsE2
Over the living water that preparesE2
Still widening mystery she her speed the moreF
Urges exulting to have lost the shoreF
Supported by the joy that sets her freeK
Delighted mistress of her destinyK
Fills the wide night with beating of her wingO2
And is content for ever voyagingO2
By timeless courses over worlds unknownR
Lifted and lost abounding and aloneR
