In the hour of my distressA
When temptations me oppressA
And when I my sins confessA
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When I lie within my bedC
Sick in heart and sick in headC
And with doubts discomfortedC
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the house doth sigh and weepD
And the world is drown'd in sleepD
Yet mine eyes the watch do keepD
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the artless doctor seesE
No one hope but of his feesE
And his skill runs on the leesE
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When his potion and his pillF
Has or none or little skillF
Meet for nothing but to killF
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the passing bell doth tollG
And the furies in a shoalG
Come to fright a parting soulG
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the tapers now burn blueG
And the comforters are fewG
And that number more than trueG
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the priest his last hath pray'dC
And I nod to what is saidC
'Cause my speech is now decay'dC
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When God knows I'm tost aboutC
Either with despair or doubtC
Yet before the glass be outC
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the tempter me pursu'thH
With the sins of all my youthH
And half damns me with untruthH
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the flames and hellish criesI
Fright mine ears and fright mine eyesI
And all terrors me surpriseI
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
-
When the Judgment is reveal'dC
And that open'd which was seal'dC
When to Thee I have appeal'dC
Sweet Spirit comfort meB
