Put off Thy robe of purple then go onA
To the sad place of executionB
Thine hour is come and the tormentor standsC
Ready to pierce Thy tender feet and handsC
Long before this the base the dull the rudeD
Th' inconstant and unpurged multitudeD
Yawn for Thy coming some ere this time cryE
How He defers how loath He is to dieE
Amongst this scum the soldier with his spearF
And that sour fellow with his vinegarG
His sponge and stick do ask why Thou dost stayH
So do the scurf and bran too Go Thy wayH
Thy way Thou guiltless man and satisfyE
By Thine approach each their beholding eyeE
Not as a thief shalt Thou ascend the mountI
But like a person of some high accountI
The Cross shall be Thy stage and Thou shalt thereJ
The spacious field have for Thy theatreG
Thou art that Roscius and that marked out manK
That must this day act the tragedianK
To wonder and affrightment Thou art HeL
Whom all the flux of nations comes to seeL
Not those poor thieves that act their parts with TheeL
Those act without regard when once a kingM
And God as Thou art comes to sufferingM
No no this scene from Thee takes life and senseN
And soul and spirit plot and excellenceO
Why then begin great King ascend Thy throneK
And thence proceed to act Thy PassionK
To such an height to such a period raisedP
As hell and earth and heav'n may stand amazedP
God and good angels guide Thee and so blessQ
Thee in Thy several parts of bitternessR
That those who see Thee nail'd unto the treeL
May though they scorn Thee praise and pity TheeL
And we Thy lovers while we see Thee keepS
The laws of action will both sigh and weepS
And bring our spices to embalm Thee deadT
That done we'll see Thee sweetly buriedU
