A lantern light from deeper in the barn	A
Shone on a man and woman in the door	B
And threw their lurching shadows on a house	C
Near by all dark in every glossy window	D
A horse's hoof pawed once the hollow floor	B
And the back of the gig they stood beside	E
Moved in a little The man grasped a wheel	F
The woman spoke out sharply Whoa stand still	G
I saw it just as plain as a white plate	H
She said as the light on the dashboard ran	I
Along the bushes at the roadside a man's face	J
You must have seen it too	K

it was a face	J

Joel I'll have to look I can't go in	N
I can't and leave a thing like that unsettled	O
Doors locked and curtains drawn will make no difference	P
I always have felt strange when we came home	Q
To the dark house after so long an absence	P
And the key rattled loudly into place	J
Seemed to warn someone to be getting out	R
At one door as we entered at another	S
What if I'm right and someone all the time	T
Don't hold my arm	U

You speak as if this were a travelled road	W
You forget where we are What is beyond	X
That he'd be going to or coming from	Y
At such an hour of night and on foot too	K
What was he standing still for in the bushes	Z

It's not so very late it's only dark	A2
There's more in it than you're inclined to say	B2
Did he look like	C2

He looked like anyone	D2
I'll never rest to night unless I know	D
Give me the lantern	E2

She pushed past him and got it for herself	F2

Listen He kicked a stone Hear that hear that	I2
He's coming towards us Joel go in please	J2

In the first place you can't make me believe it's	K2

It is or someone else he's sent to watch	L2
And now's the time to have it out with him	M2
While we know definitely where he is	N2
Let him get off and he'll be everywhere	H2
Around us looking out of trees and bushes	Z
Till I sha'n't dare to set a foot outdoors	O2
And I can't stand it Joel let me go	D

But it's nonsense to think he'd care enough	P2

You mean you couldn't understand his caring	V
Oh but you see he hadn't had enough	P2
Joel I won't I won't I promise you	K
We mustn't say hard things You mustn't either	S

I'll be the one if anybody goes	Q2
But you give him the advantage with this light	R2
What couldn't he do to us standing here	S2
And if to see was what he wanted why	T2
He has seen all there was to see and gone	U2

He appeared to forget to keep his hold	V2
But advanced with her as she crossed the grass	W2

What do you want she cried to all the dark	A2
She stretched up tall to overlook the light	R2
That hung in both hands hot against her skirt	X2

There's no one so you're wrong he said	Y2

What do you want she cried and then herself	F2
Was startled when an answer really came	Z2

Nothing It came from well along the road	W

She reached a hand to Joel for support	A3
The smell of scorching woollen made her faint	B3

What are you doing round this house at night	R2

Nothing A pause there seemed no more to say	B2

And then the voice again You seem afraid	C3
I saw by the way you whipped up the horse	D3
I'll just come forward in the lantern light	R2
And let you see	E3

Yes do Joel go back	F3

She stood her ground against the noisy steps	G3
That came on but her body rocked a little	H3
