Thus of old the Douglas didA
He left his land as he was bidA
With the royal heart of Robert the BruceB
In a golden case with a golden lidA
-
To carry the same to the Holy LandC
By which we see and understandC
That that was the place to carry a heartD
At loyalty and love s commandC
-
And that was the case to carry it inE
The Douglas had not far to winE
Before he came to the land of SpainF
Where long a holy war had beenE
-
Against the too victorious MoorG
And there his courage could not endureG
Not to strike a blow for GodH
Before he made his errand sureG
-
And ever it was intended soI
That a man for God should strike a blowI
No matter the heart he has in chargeJ
For the Holy Land where hearts should goI
-
But when in battle the foe were metK
The Douglas found him sore besetK
With only strength of the fighting armL
For one more battle passage yetK
-
And that as vain to save the dayM
As bring his body safe awayM
Only a signal deed to doN
And a last sounding word to sayM
-
The heart he wore in a golden chainF
He swung and flung forth into the plainF
And followed it crying 'Heart or deathO
And fighting over it perished fainF
-
So may another do of rightP
Give a heart to the hopeless fightP
The more of right the more he lovesQ
So may another redouble mightP
-
For a few swift gleams of the angry brandC
Scorning greatly not to demandC
In equal sacrifice with hisR
The heart he bore to the Holy LandC
