Robert Francis Books, Robert Francis poetry book Freedom's First Generation Authors: Robert Francis Engs
Publisher: Fordham Univ Press
Published Date: 2004
Categories: History
In this age of affirmative action and increasing complexity in black-white relations, this pioneering study of Hampton, Virginia, tells the story of what race relations in postbellum America "might have been." Here, if only for a time, the promises of Emancipation and Reconstruction were fulfilled. Why was the American Dream realized by blacks in Hampton and not elsewhere? Engs follows a community of freedmen over a thirty-year period to answer this compelling question. "Engs deserves credit for the sophistication and scope of his study and for his attention to the subtle and paradoxical. The questions addressed, the logical scope of the book, the depth of research, and the author's crisp writing style contribute to making this book a major addition to the literature."-Journal of American History

Robert Francis Books, Robert Francis poetry book Collected Poems, 1936-1976 Authors: Robert Francis
Publisher: Univ of Massachusetts Press
Published Date: 1985-10-11
Categories: Poetry
Gathered here in their entirety are the seven previous volumes of Robert Francis poetry -- Stand with Me Here, Valhalla and Other Poems, The Sound I Listened For, The Face against the Glass, The Orb Weaver, Come Out into the Sun, and Like Ghosts of Eagles -- together with a group of recent poems, many not previously published but "saved" to end this volume on a note of newness. Because the original seven volumes are kept in chronological order, the reader can follow the author's journey from his quiet early work to poetry of greater color, warmth, vitality, vivacity, and sportiveness; and can note just when and where Francis' style becomes more and more diversified, with word-count, fragmented surface, and the celebration of words themselves. The book is graced with eight wood engravings by Wang Hui-Ming.

Publisher: iUniverse

Categories: Poetry
Dreaming of you, my secret beloved. Its not your hearts affection but your mind that I covet. Are you a blessing or a curse in disguise? Are these feelings true, or am I living a lie? In a diverse collection of poems fifteen years in the making, Robbie Pullman shares a poignant journey into his imagination, heart, and mind as he reflects on such relatable themes as personal growth, love, inspiration, and daily struggles. As Pullman lyrically walks through his life and experiences, he explores the unknown and the truths it holds, the longing that accompanies a love unfounded, the cruel realities and imperfections of life, the aches of an elderly man, and the thoughts of a fallen angel abandoned by her lover. Brushfyre: A Rebellious Nation shares one mans poetic and spiritual journey through life as he loves, learns, and listens to his heart.

Edgar Albert Guest Poem
The Killing Place
 by Edgar Albert Guest

We're hiking along at a two-forty pace
We 're making life seem like a man-killing race,
With our nerves all on edge and our jaws firmly set
We go rushing along; with our brows lined with sweat
And our cheeks pale and drawn every minute we dash,
And the goal that we 're after is merely more cash.

We 're out for the money, the greenbacks and gold,
