At The Last. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDEFGFHIJJIKLLK MNMNOPPOQRRQSTSTULLU VWWXYZYZThe sky grows white with the moon | A |
And the sea yearns up to the night | B |
As the soul to an unknown height | B |
Drawn thence by a starry rune | A |
Only a lost wind strays | C |
Like the breath of Passion blown | D |
In the vault of the night unknown | D |
And the heart in me sobs and says | E |
'After a while we too | F |
Shall rest as the stars above | G |
When we have no more to do | F |
With the dream of life and love ' | H |
O Time thy feet that run | I |
Over the hills and waves | J |
Over the cradles and graves | J |
From the first to the final sun | I |
Some day thou too shalt cease | K |
Some way there'll come to thee | L |
Death's white tranquility | L |
The boon of an awful peace | K |
When the latest grief shall flow | M |
With the surge that drifts away | N |
And the Night shall no more go | M |
In her endless chase of Day | N |
Then shall the worn heart rest | O |
Then shall the sad Sea yearn | P |
No more for the Moon's return | P |
Like a bird on its frozen nest | O |
Dead with her young ones dead | Q |
Under her breast on the bough | R |
Where nothing can wake them now | R |
Not the Dawn with its golden tread | Q |
Where Death has been good to all | S |
Good to the mother and young | T |
And the dreams are beyond recall | S |
And the songs have all been sung | T |
So at the last to sleep | U |
So at the last to be | L |
Still as the dead still sea | L |
Never to wake and weep | U |
Never to know Love's pain | V |
Never to yearn on for | W |
What is gone for evermore | W |
To be as we were again | X |
Ere we came o'er the bourne of birth | Y |
Ere we knew of the fading flowers | Z |
Of love and of life on Earth | Y |
And the hearts that were not ours | Z |
