Thou whom chance may hither leadA
Be thou clad in russet weedB
Be thou deck'd in silken stoleC
Grave these maxims on thy soulC
Life is but a day at mostD
Sprung from night in darkness lostE
Day how rapid in its flightF
Day how few must see the nightF
Hope not sunshine every hourG
Fear not clouds will always lowerG
Happiness is but a nameH
Make content and ease thy aimH
-
Ambition is a meteor gleamI
Fame a restless idle dreamI
Pleasures insects on the wingJ
Round Peace the tenderest flower of SpringJ
Those that sip the dew aloneK
Make the butterflies thy ownK
Those that would the bloom devourG
Crush the locusts save the flowerG
For the future be prepar'dL
Guard wherever thou canst guardM
But thy utmost duly doneN
Welcome what thou canst not shunN
Follies past give thou to airO
Make their consequence thy careO
Keep the name of man in mindP
And dishonour not thy kindP
Reverence with lowly heartQ
Him whose wondrous work thou artQ
Keep His goodness still in viewR
Thy trust and thy example tooR
-
Stranger go Heaven be thy guideS
Quod the Beadsman on NithsideS
