Thou whom chance may hither leadA
Be thou clad in russet weedB
Be thou deck'd in silken stoleC
Grave these counsels on thy soulC
-
Life is but a day at mostD
Sprung from night in darkness lostE
Hope not sunshine ev'ry hourF
Fear not clouds will always lourG
As Youth and Love with sprightly danceH
Beneath thy morning star advanceH
Pleasure with her siren airI
May delude the thoughtless pairI
Let Prudence bless enjoyment's cupJ
Then raptur'd sip and sip it upJ
-
As thy day grows warm and highK
Life's meridian flaming nighK
Dost thou spurn the humble valeL
Life's proud summits would'st thou scaleL
Check thy climbing step elateM
Evils lurk in felon waitM
Dangers eagle pinion'd boldN
Soar around each cliffy holdN
While cheerful peace with linnet songO
Chants the lowly dells amongP
-
As the shades of ev'ning closeQ
Beck'ning thee to long reposeR
As life itself becomes diseaseS
Seek the chimney nook of easeS
There ruminate with sober thoughtT
On all thou'st seen and heard and wroughtT
And teach the sportive younkers roundU
Saws of experience sage and soundU
Say man's true genuine estimateV
The grand criterion of his fateM
Is not Art thou high or lowW
Did thy fortune ebb or flowW
Wast thou cottager or kingX
Peer or peasant no such thingX
Did many talents gild thy spanY
Or frugal nature grudge thee oneZ
Tell them and press it on their mindA2
As thou thyself must shortly findA2
The smile or frown of awful Heav'nZ
To virtue or to vice is giv'nZ
Say to be just and kind and wiseB2
There solid self enjoyment liesB2
That foolish selfish faithless waysC2
Lead to the wretched vile and baseD2
-
Thus resign'd and quiet creepE2
To the bed of lasting sleepE2
Sleep whence thou shalt ne'er awakeF2
Night where dawn shall never breakF2
Till future life future no moreG2
To light and joy the good restoreG2
To light and joy unknown beforeG2
-
Stranger go Hea'vn be thy guideH2
Quod the beadsman of NithsideH2
