I HOLD it sir my bounden dutyA
To warn you how that Master TootieA
Alias Laird M'GaunB
Was here to hire yon lad awayC
'Bout whom ye spak the tither dayC
An' wad hae don't aff han'B
But lest he learn the callan tricksD
An' faith I muckle doubt himE
Like scrapin out auld Crummie's nicksD
An' tellin lies about themF
As lieve then I'd have thenB
Your clerkship he should sairG
If sae be ye may beA
Not fitted otherwhereG

Altho' I say't he's gleg enoughH
An' 'bout a house that's rude an' roughH
The boy might learn to swearG
But then wi' you he'll be sae taughtA
An' get sic fair example straughtA
I hae na ony fearG
Ye'll catechise him every quirkI
An' shore him weel wi' hellJ
An' gar him follow to the kirkI
Aye when ye gang yourselJ
If ye then maun be thenB
Frae hame this comin' FridayA
Then please sir to lea'e sirG
The orders wi' your ladyA

My word of honour I hae gi'enB
In Paisley John's that night at e'enB
To meet the warld's wormK
To try to get the twa to greeG
An' name the airles an' the feeA
In legal mode an' formL
I ken he weel a snick can drawG
When simple bodies let himE
An' if a Devil be at a'M
In faith he's sure to get himE
To phrase you and praise youN
Ye ken your Laureat scornsO
The pray'r still you share stillJ
