To Alex. Cunningham, Esq., Writer, Edinburgh Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JKJK

MY godlike friend nay do not stareA
You think the phrase is odd likeB
But God is love the saints declareA
Then surely thou art god likeB
-
-
And is thy ardour still the sameC
And kindled still at ANNAD
Others may boast a partial flameC
But thou art a volcanoE
-
-
Ev'n Wedlock asks not love beyondF
Death's tie dissolving portalG
But thou omnipotently fondF
May'st promise love immortalG
-
-
Thy wounds such healing powers defyH
Such symptoms dire attend themI
That last great antihectic tryH
MARRIAGE perhaps may mend themI
-
-
Sweet Anna has an air a graceJ
Divine magnetic touchingK
She talks she charms but who can traceJ
The process of bewitchingK
