'Twas where the birch and sounding thong are ply'dA
The noisy domicile of pedant prideA
Where ignorance her darkening vapour throwsB
And cruelty directs the thickening blowsB
upon a time Sir Abece the greatA
In all his pedagogic powers elateA
His awful chair of state resolves to mountA
And call the trembling vowels to accountA
-
First enter'd A a grave broad solemn wightA
But ah deform'd dishonest to the sightA
His twisted head look'd backward on the wayC
And flagrant from the scourge he grunted aiD
-
Reluctant E stalk'd in with piteous raceE
The justling tears ran down his honest faceE
That name that well worn name and all his ownF
Pale he surrenders at the tyrant's throneF
The pedant stifles keen the Roman soundA
Not all his mongrel diphthongs can compoundA
And next the title following close behindA
He to the nameless ghastly wretch assign'dA
-
The cobweb'd gothic dome resounded Y-
In sullen vengeance I disdain'd reply-
The pedant swung his felon cudgel roundA
And knock'd the groaning vowel to the groundA
-
In rueful apprehension enter'd OG
The wailing minstrel of despairing woeG
Th' Inquisitor of Spain the most expertA
Might there have learnt new mysteries of his artA
So grim deform'd with horrors entering UH
His dearest friend and brother scarcely knewH
-
As trembling U stood staring all aghastA
The pedant in his left hand clutched him fastA
In helpless infants' tears he dipp'd his rightA
Baptiz'd him eu and kick'd him from his sightA
